Disclaimer: Hellsing isn't mine, I just play in their playground from time to time...  call it trespassing, but I love that world.  Sort of a Hellsing x Black Butler crossover with original characters.

Gabriel stood overlooking a smaller building where his Master diligently worked.  For decades it had been like this,  they lay out the trap and exterminate the unclean souls.  Yet today something was different.  She toiled harder than she should, her movements had slowed drastically, and finally he realized that she was unable to battle the darkness any longer.

He could sense the demons swarming in to feast upon the weak woman's soul as she collapsed. They would hardly get the chance.  To let such filth touch her soul would be an unforgivable offense.  So as she lay there in the gravel of the building, he still acted as her sword, her shield, silently dispatching her enemies until they were gone.   When the last creature fell, he turned and walked over to her.   It meant walking into the warded circle that she had created, and he endured the pain silently and with a gentle smile on his face as he reached down and lifted her up in his arms.

"It has been an adventure."   She smiled weakly.

"Yes Master it has..."   Most days he would regard her coolly,  reminding her that he was not human, but in that moment there was a great sadness in his eyes.

"It's time."

"Yes Master."   His answers light, simple.  He stood up, removing her from that circle and taking her back down to the street level where he walked with her back to her shop.

"What are you doing?"

"Finishing preparations Master."  He did not explain further as he felt her rest her head against his chest.  He took her inside the shop, up the stairs, and sat her on the edge of her bed.  Once there, like he had done every night for decades, he doted over her, making sure that she were comfortable in her pajamas before seeing her off to bed. "You have one more task ahead of you Master... and then you can rest."   He unsheathed her blade with an unnatural precision.  The magic upon it was a sickening feeling to the demon.  He held the blade out to her, his head bowed.   Did she understand what he was asking of her?   As he remained knelt before her, with one hand he reached up to undo his necktie, unbutton the fine silk of his shirt,  and slip his overcoat and shirt off, letting them sink down around his waist.

There was one final thing.   With both hands, he carefully lifted the chain that had gleamed around his neck as though it were polished every day (and it was).  Leaning forward, he placed it around her neck.   The reality of what he was doing struck her hard.  He wasn't going to consume her soul, he was saying goodbye.

"It has been a pleasure serving you Aidan.  Now... strike your blade true... you will only get one chance."  He sat up fully, still smiling at her.  If a demon could cry he might very well in that moment as he rested his still hands on his leg.  The gloves had come off with the overcoat.  The sigil on his hand was still plainly visible.

"Our contract..."

"Will be void."

Tears fell down the witches face as she lifted the sword up in her weakening hands.  With a single blow, she plunged the sword deep into his chest.  She wasn't sure what hurt her more.  Harming her assistant after so many years... or the fact that this was truly goodbye.  She watched him as he rose to his feet, blood tracing down the sword and down his body.  It was a pained thing to see even as he continued to see her to bed, tucking her in as he had all those years before.  Yet on his hand the demon mark was now gone as it was gone on her eye.  She closed her eyes.  There were no goodbyes.

No demon could claim her soul...

He saw to the rest of her relaxation even with the sword plunged deep into his chest.  There was that light, ever present smile.  She had a feeling that if he had been able to remain on this plain and serve her without the contract he would have.  "Sweet dreams Master".

Gabriel walked out of the room, his steps growing heavier as he made it to her door and pulled it closed behind him.  "It truly was a pleasure serving you..."   It was then that inhuman tears fell and he sank down on those stairs, his own life coming to an end.   A demon killed on a human plain wasn't going back to hell.  Not only had he voided the contract, but his own existence to set hers free.  It was the closest thing to love he had ever been able to express.

"You should be in there with her..."

He lifted his head up to see her familiar staring up at him.  "No.  You should be with your Master, not I."   He reached up to open the door for the feline.  The cat's movements betrayed how weak she was becoming.  Yet what he didnt expect was Aidan to overhear their conversation.

"Gabriel..."

He turned his head as the cat went inside.  "Yes Aidan?"

"Stay with me..."

He rose to his feet once more, moving back into the room, drawing the sword from its wound.  Now the blood could flow freely.  It was a wound that would not heal.   In one of her arms was her black cat, nestled against her...  and her other arm, it was offered out to him.  Such a kind gesture, but that had always been her way.  He reached down to her hand with his but was surprised when she insisted on pulling him down to her.  He lay down on he edge of the bed, her arm curled around him.  His head rested on her shoulder, his arm stretched out over her stomach, and the hand that had the demon contract on it was curled slightly in her familiar's fur.

They had become a strange family.  In death would be their parting point.  Her soul went up.  His ceased to exist.  However, what a picture they painted together.  The cat disappeared, leaving only a warm impression where he had been.   Then Gabriel disappeared, leaving only the bloodstain to show he had ever been there in the first place.
