Promises, is seems, were made to be broken.   He stood in front of Integra's desk with the full fury of her words lashing at him like a thousand shards of glass.  It seemed that finally she had enough of the bond they shared.  Coupled with the harassment from the other Directors, there was little recourse she could do apart from separating the two vampires.   He didnt lift his head up.  He didn't look at her.   Alucard's voice barely registered as he simply... disappeared.

He reappeared out at the pier, his thoughts blocked out.  He didnt look up.  He didnt breath to give away where he was.  No, he kept his mind perfectly blank.  He walked up the gangway.  Would Alucard he able to figure out where he was in time?  The ship was ready to head out to sea while Alucard and Integra went rounds about what had just happened in the office.

When he finally did lift his head up, the ship was on its way out to sea.  There was an odd peaceful feeling as he closed his eyes.  Was Alucard listening?  "I'm sorry I couldn't keep my promise..."   Once the ship was several miles out and he was beyond the reach of anyone from Hellsing he climbed up onto the railing of the ship.  Oh like such a cheesy romantic flick just then, but there was no one to pull him back.  There were no tears as he stared down at what would soon become his final resting place.  Only good memories of his time at Hellsing before it all fell apart.

He leapt from the railing, and the second that his body hit the water it were as though a thousand knives were stabbed into his body.  The cold took his inhuman breath away and he felt his power being drained from him as he reached for the surface.   In that murky abyss he found darkness... and hell.

...

He was gone during the battles with Millenium.   He was gone when Alucard had to destroy almost all the souls in his body to survive.   He was gone with the Count went back to his home in Millenium to torement their Master.   Only after decades had passed had his body been disturbed enough by the tide to be brought back into a fishermans net and drawn up to the surface.   The creature of the night's eyes opened slowly as he drew in a partially choked breath.  He looked so very frail... his body was in bad shape, and only the old man who had brought him to the surface was there.   A pity to kill the one who saved you, but it meant survival as he took the mans life, his body reforming.

He looked down...  the sigils on his hands were still there.   Did that mean Integra was still alive?

Very rarely was Alucard ever truly pissed at Integra. He'd told her that he would stand by her and that no one else would ever control Hellsing as long as he walked the earth. Yet she had been resolute in her decision, leaving the No Life King with no recourse.

It had been a long time since he felt helpless.

With Eric's parting words, Alucard's rage had spread over the grounds of Hellsing in a soul crunching wave. Which had led to another fight between him and the Master he served.

Years passed and Alucard carried out Integra's orders without fail and rift between them eventually healed although there was an unspoken agreement between them that Eric was not mentioned.

In the pre-dawn hours of every night, he remembered his little thief before he forced himself to sleep.

Then Millenium came and London was razed nearly to the ground. For years the No Life King disappeared, leaving a hopeful Seras and an ever growing cynical Integra behind.

"I never got to tell him," she said to the Draculina that never left her side during those years, "that I was wrong."

His return was greeted gladly by them both - a reunion over which a cloud hung - a name none of them said out loud. Sometimes in the dark of night, Alucard thought he'd started to feel the thief's presence again, but from far away. It was faint, but when he approached Integra, she agreed to let him search.

Finally the old wound between then healed and Alucard had a new mission.
